Comprehension 

 I. Read the following stanzas and answer the questions based on them:

 1. It takes much time................ sprouting leaves. 

 Questions: 

 (i) How much time does it take to kill a tree ? (वृक्ष की हत्या करने में कितना समय लगता है?) 

Ans. It takes a very long time to kill a tree.

 (ii) 'Not a simple jab of the knife will do it.' What does 'it' refer to here? ('चाकू का साधारण आघात यह नहीं करेगा।' 'it' यहाँ पर किसकी ओर संकेत करता है?)

Ans. Here it' refers to the killing of the tree'.

 (iii) What does a tree absorb ? (पेड़ क्या अवशोषित करता है?)


Ans. A tree absorbs sunlight, air and water.

 (iv) Where do leaves sprout ? (पत्तियाँ कहाँ फूटती हैं?) 

Ans. Leaves sprout out of the leprous hide of the tree.

2. So hack and................. to former size.

Questions :

(i) For what purpose is asked here 'to hack and chop'?

(यहाँ किस उद्देश्य के लिए 'hack and chop' पूछा गया है?)

Ans. "To hack and chop' is asked here to cut or kill a tree.

(ii) What will happen to the bleeding bark ? (रक्तस्त्रावित छाल को क्या होगा?)


Ans. The bleeding bark will heal.

(iii) Where will curled green twigs rise from? (मडी हई हरी टहनियाँ कहाँ से उगेंगी?)

Ans. Curled green twigs will rise from close to the ground.

(iv) Which word in the above stanza mean the same as 'delicate'?

Ans. If they are not checked, miniature boughs will expand again to former size.



3. No, the root is ..................inside the earth.

Questions:

(i) What is to be done to the root ? (जड़ का क्या किया जाना है?)


Ans. The root is to be pulled out.


(ii) Where is the root hidden ? (जड़ कहाँ छिपी होती है?)

Ans. The root is hidden inside the cave of anchoring cave.

(iii) What can be done to kill a tree ? (पेड़ की हत्या की जाने के लिए क्या किया जा सकता है?)

Ans. To kill a tree it should be roped, tied and pulled entirely out of the earth.

(iv) Which word in the above stanza mean the same as 'delicate'?

Ans. The word in the above stanza that means the same as 'delicate' is 'sensitive'.

Ans. The tree is scorched and chocked in 'sun and air'.


(iii) What happens after it ? (इसके पश्चात् क्या होता है?)

Ans. After it browns, hardens, twists, whithers and then it is killed.

(iv) Which word in the above stanza mean 'drying up and dying'?

(ऊपर के बंद में किस शब्द का अर्थ 'drying up and dying' है?)

Ans. The word 'withering' means 'drying up and dying'.
