👉 Question (1) How did the writer (Amitav Ghosh) react to Shahid's mention of his approaching death ?

✍️ Answer. Once While scanning and thumbing through his engagement book Shahid spoke that he could not see a thing. He added that he hoped he did not mean that he was dying. This telephonic talk between Shahid and the author gave the author a feeling of Shahid's approaching death. 

👉 Question (2) What did Shahid ask the writer to do after his death ?

✍️ Answer. The first time Agha Shahid Ali spoke to the writer about his approaching death was on 25 April, 2001. He had been under cancer treatment for some 14 months. He had already suffered a few lapes of money. He requested Amitav to write something about him after his death and Amitav kept his promise.

✍️ Answer. AMITAV GHOSH was introduced to Shahid's work long before he met him. His 1997 collections, 'The country without a post office' he made a powerful impression on him. His voice was like none that had ever heard before. It was at once lyrical and fiercely disciplined, engaged and yet deeply inward. He knew of no one else who could even conceive of publishing a line like- 'mad heart, be brave'.

✍️ Answer. JAMES Merrill, the poet, completely changed the direction of Shahid's poetry. After coming in contact with him, Shahid began to try out strict, metrical patterns and verse forms. No one had a greater influence on Shahid's poetry than James Merrill. In the poem in which he most openly anticipated his own death, 'I dream I am at the Ghat of the only world', he awarded the envoy to Merrill.

👉 Answer. The Writer Amitav Ghosh had known Shahid's work long before he met the man. One of their common friends put him in touch with Shahid. In 1998 and 1999 they had several conversations on the phone and even met a couple of times at that moment.


But they were no more than acquaintances until Shahid moved to Brooklyn in 2000, when he had a sudden blackout in February. Tests revealed that he had a nalignant brain tumour. The building in which Shahid lived in Brooklyn was some eight blocks away from the writer's apartment. 




👉 Question (2) What responsibility did Shahid entrust to the author (Amitav Ghosh) ? How did the latter discharge it ?

✍️ Answer. Shahid asked the author (Amitav Ghosh) to write something about him after his demise. He was giving the author a specific responsibility. He wanted the writer to remember him not through recitatives of memory and friendship but through the written word and his own opinion. 


The author promised to fulfil Shahid's desire. From that day onwards, condition, even the most trivial exchanges had a special charge and urgency. There was an inescapable poignancy when he talked about food and half-forgotton figures from the past.
